About the Gallery
The Fire House Gallery & Shop is a $125,000 public-private economic development project launched by Berryville Main Street in August, 2009 to transform an historic building in its downtown commercial district into a unique retail destination.
Constructed in the ‘30’s, this handsome brick building has played a key role in Berryville, Virginia’s history – housing its first firehouse for more than two decades and its town office for close to five.
Starting in late August, 2009, the building was gutted and retrofitted to accommodate the new gallery and office space for Berryville Main Street. Construction was financed with a $15,000 grant from the town of Berryville and a combination $60,000 grant and loan from the county. The remaining $50,000 came from private donations and gifts-in- kind from individuals and businesses within the community.
The bright, new retail space opened for in January. It features high-quality handmade items from over 50 local artists including paintings, sculpture, fiber art, wood, stained glass, jewelry, pottery, works on paper, and more.
In addition to adding a new retail destination to Berryville’s growing line-up of shops and stores, the gallery will also contribute to the community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation for the visual arts though a series of lectures, presentations and live demonstrations, which launch in late spring.
About Berryville Main Street
Berryville Main Street is part of a nationwide initiative created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1985. The not-for-profit organization undertook this major restoration project in response to the National Trust’s mandate: to promote economic revitalization in small towns across the United States. Berryville is one of only 21 towns in the state of Virginia to carry the prestigious Main Street designation.
